Happy Sunday sweets! . This is us!! The faces behind Sustainable & Well. Luke and I have always been really conscious about health, wellness and sustainability. Always wanting to do things the way they were designed to be done. I feel so lucky to have found a partner who shares these same values as me instead of just thinking they are silly and not being on board with this type of lifestyle. . When we got married is when we really started getting more passionate about how sustainability has so many different facets to it in terms of sustainability for the body, mind, planet, finances & marriage. . Since being married a year and a half ago we have really chipped away at things and made big changes in our lives. He’s definitely the analytical one, the spreadsheet & budget maker, the researcher. And I am the creative one, the one who loves to cook, design our next project, and make sustainable, healthy, financially smart living tasteful AND accessible. He loves mountains, I love the beach. He’s the craftsman, I’m the designer, and contributing our strengths together we create a wholly sustainable life.

You could be spending as much as $7000 over the course of your life time on disposable razors 🤯 We don’t often look at it from this perspective because disposable razors are relatively cheap upfront. But when you look at it over the course of your lifetime... it adds up & you start to think what you could otherwise be spending that money on🤭 This safety razor only cost me around $50 & if I look after it, it should last me a lifetime. The only thing I need to change on it are the blades, which can be completely recycled & purchased for a small cost. So if you look at making the switch from an economic perspective it is a no-brainer. The added benefit is you’ll be creating much less waste 💚

Remember guys, when a plastic-looking cup, straw or utensil says “compostable” on it, it needs to be COMPOSTED. 🌱 Throwing these items in the trash means they will end up in the landfill and NOT biodegrade. ✖️Additionally, if these items end up in our waterways, they will behave just like plastic and become a hazard to wildlife. 🐋 ‘Compostable’ plastics are only better than plastic when proper composting facilities are a part of its life-cycle. Forget greenwashing! Spread education instead. 📢 @pelacase

How can we have food shortages with so much surplus food? 🤔🍃 Reposted from @wastefreeplanet We love seeing @hero_to_0 Le Garbage posts, it's so important we understand the amount of foodwaste comes from our shopping centres. Don't forget to go give @hero_to_0 A follow! Repost @hero_to_0 ・・・ Perfect food found in a supermarket's trashcan 🛒 Organic lentils and rice, a lot of soy, granola, bread, fruits and veggies 🍐 My flatmates and I "shop at Le Garbage" and trust me, it's not easy: seeing perfectly edible food in a trashcan hurts. There's no reason for most of it to be thrown away. Supermarkets should improve their discount sections, promote the consumption of "ugly" goodies and stop throwing out products just because of their damaged packaging. Sellers, just like consumers and producers, must do their best to not throw anything away. This is a climate emergency and we have to do more. If we think we're doing enough already, then it's time to take another step in the right direction 🌍 - #regrann

They’ve used material made with plastic bottles sourced from remote islands, beaches, coastal communities and shorelines -- all with the goal of preventing it from polluting the ocean. . What's your thoughts 💭🤔? Reposted from @doitfordavid_ Do you think we need to phase out plastic all together? Or perhaps we should just focus on single use plastics instead? Maybe we should take a few lessons from countries like #Norway that still use plastic, but actually recycle up to 97% of the material through deposit-return schemes and other initiatives? Let's be better, not perfect 🍃 Reposted from @sustainyoself My grocery haul from yesterday! 🛒 Not pictured are the few things that do have plastic (on the bottom of the cart) which consist of a box of cereal, 2 cartons of soy milk and a pint of ice cream. And also the produce stickers, labels and the plastic lid on the giant jar of syrup (I use 100% pure and local maple syrup to sweeten my coffee and for my morning oats 😌). • In the beginning of my low waste journey I felt SO GUILTY for buying things in plastic and it made me feel like a failure. But truth is, most of my grocery haul's are usually over 60% plastic-free and I'm okay with that! Criticism for not being zero-waste-enough is some BS and I think intention is what's important here. Not everyone has access to plastic free options and sometimes the plastic free options are more expensive, so there are sometimes a lot of barrieres involved to avoiding plastic. Doing what you can, being a conscious consumer and living with intention are some of the best mindsets to keep when living this way. Also deciding if you ~really need~ something that comes in plastic. I don't really need ice cream or cereal, but once in a while is okay with me. ALSO I got spices in bulk in 4oz glass jars and each one was under $3. Just wanted to throw that out there 🤯💪🏻 I also got 3 giant bags of couscous, rice and penne pasta (pictured, bottom left under the mushrooms and broccoli) to stock up on staples. The bag of rice weighed over 5 pounds, so it'll last me a few months and it cost about $10. The couscous and pasta were about the same quantity and cost around $5 each. • Last thing, when I go grocery shopping I usually bring containers and bags for what I'm planning to buy, so I don't buy things by impulse. Usually 3-4 reusable bags, a handful of produce bags that I also use for grains and legumes, and a few jars for spices or other bulk items ✨✨✨ Also props to you if you read this long ass caption 😂 happy Wednesday y'all! # -Geevie - #regrann

Have you ever noticed that there isn’t an ingredient list on cleaning products?...😧 Canada’s passive laws around labelling are responsible for that. Because they aren’t categorized as food, beverages nor drugs to be consumed, they only warn of their acute dangers - the symbols used in WHMIS. However, people are coming into close contact with these chemicals all the time: from clothes, to counter tops, to floors, to aerosols. Consequently, Europe instated GHS rules which signal germ cell mutagenicity (mutations passed on to children), carcinogenicity (cancer), reproductive toxicity (interference with normal reproduction), specific target organ toxicity, and environmental hazard; yet, Canada fails to address these dangers. Here are some problems with commercial cleaners: 1. They contain toxic ingredients to humans and wildlife that can be cancer-causing or pose chronic health problems⚠️These chemicals then evaporate and disperse in the air you breathe. The air quality in your home might be worse than outside. 2. These chemicals enter rivers and lakes when drained down the sink. Animals can directly ingest these through the water by drinking it or osmosis, or by eating contaminated food. Humans also eat the contaminated animals when fishing in affected lakes. 3. CO2 emissions from transport. These factories and labs which produce these products can be located far away and use trucks or planes for transport. Is there a solution to all these problems?🙆🏼‍♀️ Nope. I’m just kidding, of course there is! Make your own cleaner🤩 Reuse old cleaner bottles to put your homemade one inside. To make: 🧼Clean the bottles adequately: I add some a bit of vinegar and water, shake, then drain it. Repeat. 🧼Pour a 1:1 ratio of water and vinegar. 🧼That’s it. The smell of vinegar can be pungent, but it goes away after a minute. Otherwise you can use an essential oil of your choice to mask the vinegar and give a fresh scent. If you run out of vinegar, save your container to refill it at @nugrocery. Pros include never running out of product (as long as there is vinegar), only taking half a minute to make it and not getting cancer! Happy cleaning🤠

Want to stop eating 50,000+ pieces of plastic every year? Well, it's not as simple as ditching fish. Plastic has infiltrated every corner of our planet, so it's no surprise that it's ending up in our ecosystems and back onto your plate! There's no perfect solution to stop consuming plastic. It's everywhere in the air we breathe, and in the water we drink. So what can be done? A switch to a plant-based diet might cut some of the plastic you'd ingest, but the jury is still out on the plastic content of many foods like dairy, veggies and other processed products. For now, the solution remains the same as always! Avoid products with plastic packaging if you can and boycott the biggest plastic polluters like @cocacola, @nestle and @pepsi! . . ————————————————— FOLLOW - @woodensil 🌎💪💪🏾💪🏼 ————————————————— @surfrider
