Yesterday I completed QPR Training. It was eye opening to hear why each of us was there - for a few it was a work requirement, but most had lost someone they love or were scared they were going to. • I HIGHLY recommend if your community has a *suicide prevention course* that you check it out. I learned so much, even as someone who reports Behavioral Health statistics and promotes best practice programs in my day-to-day work. • QPR taught me how prevalent suicide is, especially in our youth. It’s the LEADING cause of death of youth in our county. • More teenagers and young adults die from suicide than from cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia, influenza, and chronic lung disease, COMBINED. • At least now I feel more prepared to Question if I see warning signs, know a few possible ways to Persuade someone to seek help, and learned where to Refer or to go for help. • There are SO many great resources out there! TRIGGER WARNING - Suicide - Today I saw a post by @mentalhealthmuscle opening up a discussion about mental health and social media, addressing the current topic of whether social media itself is to blame for an increase in mental health issues and suicides especially amongst young people or whether it’s the service users and the content that’s put out there. - So I wanted to take the time to express my thoughts on the subject. - I strongly believe that people like to assign blame and do so all too easily, sometimes without due cause but those same people also don’t like to take responsibility for their own actions and energies. - Gandhi said - “be the change you wish to see in the world” - not f**king complain about the lack of change from behind your phone/computer whilst doing nothing to contribute to it. - Is social media to blame or are we just being made more aware of the problems surrounding bullying, mental health and suicide as a result of social media? - I believe social media isn’t the problem, people are. The behaviours and attitudes that kids and indeed adults are adopting and adapting to is the reason for a rise in mental health issues. - Society has become too reliant on negativity as a topic of conversation. - We look for a negative in every situation and we take offence to every minute detail of something that challenges us or makes us feel uncomfortable so we reject instead of trying to understand. - Social media isn’t the problem. The problem is that social media is holding us accountable for our actions and we don’t like that. - It’s time to change! - My opinion is simple ... be nice.
