Se avete mai sentito il termine “materia oscura”, in buona parte lo dovete a questa donna. Nata nel 1928, proprio oggi avrebbe compiuto 91 anni. Era il 1970 e Vera Rubin, insieme al collega Kent Ford, stava studiando la rotazione della galassia di Andromeda. Quello che osservò cambiò per sempre il volto dell’astronomia. Chiunque si sarebbe aspettato che Andromeda ruotasse come fa il sistema solare, in cui i pianeti più lontani orbitano più lentamente. Andromeda però non ruota così. Le sue parti più esterne ruotano in modo rigido, come un disco su un giradischi: il tempo per completare un giro non dipende dalla distanza dal centro. Sembrava che attorno ad Andromeda ci fosse più massa di quanta riusciamo a vedere. Oltre 5 volte la massa della materia che riusciamo a vedere. Immaginate la faccia di Vera Rubin. Una quantità ENORME di materia che non emette luce in NESSUNA banda elettromagnetica? È come se il pubblico a un concerto di Springsteen non facesse alcun rumore, neanche un decibel. Alla fine dovette ipotizzare che le galassie sono immerse in giganteschi aloni di materia non ordinaria che oggi chiamiamo “materia oscura”. Poche scoperte in fisica sono state così sconvolgenti, eppure Vera Rubin non ebbe mai la soddisfazione di ritirare un premio Nobel. Al momento, l’ultima donna a essere insignita di un premio Nobel per la fisica fu Maria Goeppert Mayer, nel 1963, che fu anche la seconda dopo Marie Curie. Poi basta. Prima dell’iscrizione al college gli insegnanti di Vera le consigliarono di stare lontana dalla scienza. Per fortuna non lo fece, ma per lei non fu facile. Fu la prima donna ad avere accesso all’Osservatorio di Monte Palomar, nel 1965; lì non c’erano ancora spogliatoi femminili. Vera allora ritagliò una gonna di carta e la incollò all’omino stilizzato vicino alla porta. Dovette letteralmente ritagliarsi un posto in un ambiente al 100% maschile che non valorizzava abbastanza il suo lavoro. Quanti di voi, che pure siete appassionati di astronomia, non hanno MAI sentito il nome Vera Rubin? O Cecilia Pyne? O Henrietta Leavitt? O Jocelyn Bell? Vera Rubin morì nel 2016, il giorno di Natale.
