Maar wat kunnen we nu zelf doen om onze slaap te verbeteren en dus beter te presteren op school? - Ten eerste is het vaak een gegeven dat 's morgens de wekker vaak op een vast tijdstip gaat. Dus we hebben vaak alleen invloed op hoe laat we zelf naar bed gaan. Daar zit dus ook het eerste punt van winst; ritme. Wanneer je elke dag rond hetzelfde tijdstip naar bed gaat, maakt je lichaam op de juiste tijd melatonine (het slaaphormoon) aan waardoor je sneller kan slapen en dus uiteindelijk beter uitgerust bent. In onderzoek is ook bewezen dat het felle licht van je telefoon of TV in de slaapkamer voor het slapen je melatonine aanmaak tot wel 85% onderdrukt, en je hierdoor dus veel moeilijker in slaap komt. Verder zijn de voor de hand liggende factoren als te veel cafeïne, alcohol (ja, je slaapt sneller in, maar je slaapkwaliteit neemt ernstig af waardoor je minder uitgerust bent), geluidsoverlast (op te lossen met oordopjes) of vaak onnodige stress (al eens gemediteerd?) die je slaap kunnen beïnvloeden.
