I lead a photo walk today in the Old City of Jerusalem. One of the biggest changes since I was last here in 2009 was the rules for accessing the Dome of the Rock. It is much more restricted now. Nonetheless, it is a beautiful building and a beautiful part of the the city. It is also next to the Al-Aqsa Mosque which is one of the most important sites in Islam. Comment from Gary Arndt:

Today, March 13, marks the 10 year anniversary of the day I turned over the keys to my house and started a life of travel. 10 years is a very long time. It is the longest I’ve done anything in my life. I’ve never held a job, or had any meaningful relationship which has gone anywhere close to 10 years. I would never have guessed 10 years ago that I would still be doing this. I initially was planning on a trip around the world which would last a year or two. I certainly didn’t think this was something that would never end. In the last 10 years I’ve done more and experienced more than the vast majority of human beings who have ever lived will. It has been a truly remarkable experience. I’ve been on over 100 SCUBA dives around the world. I’ve been dog sledding. I’ve ridden in a Formula 1 car. I’ve landed and taken off on a nuclear aircraft carrier. I’ve swam with jellyfish, whale sharks, and great white sharks. Somehow, along the way, I also became a descent photographer. It is hard to express just how bad my photos were when I started. I never took a course or read a book, I just recognized that my photos were bad and spent the last decade trying to improve. The one thing I never imagined was that I’d have thousands of people around the world paying attention to my travels and enjoying my photography. Thanks to the Internet I have so met so many people during my travels that I never would have met otherwise. I’d like to thank all of you for following along, and hopefully I will have another 10 years of adventure and more photos from around the world for you to enjoy! athomeintheworld awesome_earthpix awesome_photographers awesomeearth awesomeglobe TLPicks discoverglobe earthfocus earthpix exploretocreate fantastic_earth huffpostgram ItsAmazingOutThere livetravelchannel lonelyplanet nakedplanet natgeotravel ourplanetdaily travelawesome travelingourplanet wonderful_places bbctravel

I’m off to Jerusalem in about a week to give the keynote address for TBEX International. I haven’t been in Jerusalem since 2009 and I’m excited to go back. It is, in my opinion, the most photogenic city on Earth. I’m looking forward to spending several days just walking around, taking photos. After the conference i’ll be spending another week in Israel, driving around the country, visiting World Heritage Sites which I haven’t been to before. I might also take some side trips to other parts of the country that I haven’t been to. If you are in Tel Aviv or Jerusalem at the end of March, let me know if you would like to meet up. After Israel I’ll be in New York for about a week for another conference, and to photograph the National Park Service sites in the city. athomeintheworld awesome_earthpix awesome_photographers awesomeearth awesomeglobe TLPicks discoverglobe earthfocus earthpix exploretocreate fantastic_earth huffpostgram ItsAmazingOutThere livetravelchannel lonelyplanet nakedplanet natgeotravel ourplanetdaily travelawesome travelingourplanet wonderful_places bbctravel

In this travelers humble opinion, Tikal National Park in Guatemala is the top attraction in all of Central American and perhaps the top attraction in all of Latin America. A sprawling site with dozens of Mayan ruins, it will probably take you a full day to properly explore. Shown in the photo is Temple 1, which is probably the best preserved of the many temples. It is located in the heart of Tikal in the area known as the main plaza. One of the very first places I visited when I started traveling in 2007 was Easter Island. I flew there from Tahiti and spent the better part of a week there. Even though it rained most of the time for me, I did have one clear day where I was able to go out and see the moai.

Horseshoe Bend is, as the name implies, a dramatic bend in the Colorado River just outside Page, Arizona. It is upriver from the Grand Canyon and is something which visitors to the region often overlook because it doesn’t have many signs or its own visitor center. Technically, it is part of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and is located approximately 5 miles downstream from the Glen Canyon Dam. Visitors to Page can also visit nearby Antelope Canyon, which is one of the most photogenic slot canyons in the world. athomeintheworld awesome_earthpix awesome_photographers awesomeearth awesomeglobe TLPicks discoverglobe earthfocus earthpix exploretocreate fantastic_earth huffpostgram ItsAmazingOutThere livetravelchannel lonelyplanet nakedplanet natgeotravel ourplanetdaily travelawesome travelingourplanet wonderful_places bbctravel

The Church of St. George is one of many churches in the town of Lalibela which has been carved completely out of rock. The entire area you can see in this photo was one massive rock hill which was carved away. While St. George’s is probably the best example of a rock hewn church, there are 10 other churches in the area which have also been carved from rock. These churches are the second most important place is the Ethiopian Coptic Church (after Aksum) and the most popular tourist attraction in the country. athomeintheworld awesome_earthpix awesome_photographers awesomeearth awesomeglobe TLPicks discoverglobe earthfocus earthpix exploretocreate fantastic_earth huffpostgram ItsAmazingOutThere livetravelchannel lonelyplanet nakedplanet natgeotravel ourplanetdaily travelawesome travelingourplanet wonderful_places bbctravel

One of the most spectacular natural areas of Europe has to be the Pyrenees Mountains. I’ve been able to explore the Pyrenees in the province of Girona just over the French border. While the mountains are not the highest in the world, they are very dramatic. I took this photo several years ago in the Val de Nuria, which is a ski resort accessible by train. There was a storm on one end of the valley and the sun was out on the other side. Where they met made for some interesting conditions and where I took this photo.

Most people travel to Europe for cultural attractions, but there are plenty of natural attractions to be seen as well. One of my favorite is Plitvice National Park in Croatia. Sometimes, a great wildlife moment just happens. I managed to get this shot of a polar bear with his paw print by shooting almost straight down from our tundra buggy. He approached our vehicle and then took a step back, which allowed me to capture his face and the paw print. I’ve recently published a photo essay of my November polar bear trip with @frontiersnorth on my website. Click on the link up in my bio and you can see 21 high resolution images from my trip. You can view it on a mobile device, but I highly recommend viewing it on a desktop or laptop computer if you can.
